Budget: Green group leader: have to save on traffic

Reform of the commuter allowance, reform of the company car privilege and potential savings in air travel: According to Dröge, in order to comply with the debt brake, the transport sector must be looked at closely.

Green party leader Katharina Dröge believes that savings in the transport sector are necessary in order to comply with the budgetary debt brake. The traffic light coalition has agreed to look at environmentally harmful subsidies, many of which are in the transport sector. This includes the reform of the commuter allowance, the reform of the company car privilege and there are savings opportunities in air travel, said Dröge on Monday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”.

According to Dröge, this would not only create financial leeway in the budget, but also help Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) to better meet the climate targets in transport, “where he also has a huge gap.” The Federal Environment Agency speaks of more than 60 billion euros that could be saved, among other things.

The traffic light coalition is currently arguing about the 2024 budget. Originally, the key figures for the budget were to be decided in the cabinet on Wednesday. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) canceled the appointment because he could not agree with his colleagues. The specialist ministers had announced additional requests of around 70 billion euros, for which the finance minister sees no leeway if the debt brake is adhered to and tax increases are avoided. “We will have to talk about financial realities together again in the cabinet,” Lindner told the dpa. From his point of view, the negotiations have not failed, he made clear at the weekend.
