Yevgeny Prigozhin is said to have recruited around 40,000 Russian convicts for his Wagner troupe. He threw them to the front as cannon fodder. But that source has dried up. Prigozhin is no longer allowed to recruit in prisons. Now he’s trying a new strategy to fill out the ranks of his squad.

The defenders of the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut continue to oppose the oncoming fighters of the Russian mercenary group Wagner. The battle for the city turns out to be the bloodiest of this war.

The battles for Bachmut have been raging since late summer. Every meter counts. The city is the main part of the Ukrainian line of defense in the Donetsk region. Should Russia capture the city, the troops would open the way to the major cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
