Climate crisis: climate activists praise meetings with Wissing

The positions could hardly be further apart – now it came to a conversation. The Minister of Transport met representatives of the last generation. A follow-up appointment has already been arranged.

The last generation climate group came to a positive conclusion after talking to Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), but wants to continue their protests.

“Today’s conversation with the Minister of Transport was humanely respectful and extremely fruitful,” said activist Lea Bonasera after the meeting. A follow-up meeting in mid-May has been agreed.

Nevertheless, the protest will continue. Bonasera compared this to a union strike to enforce a collective bargaining agreement. In terms of content, the group’s demands for a speed limit on motorways, a new edition of the 9-euro ticket and the establishment of a company council were discussed. The activist said that one could once again show the urgency of the climate crisis and the need to act quickly.

The last generation keeps disrupting traffic with blockades to draw attention to their demands for faster and stricter climate protection. There are also numerous blockades in Berlin again.

Before the meeting, Wissing said on Deutschlandfunk that in a democracy you have to talk. But it is clear that things cannot go on like this. “Of course I have zero tolerance for offenders.”
