Poll: Majority for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy wants to strengthen support from the West and is aiming for rapid NATO membership. But the majority of Germans are skeptical.

Almost 15 months after the Russian attack on Ukraine, a majority of Germans want Ukraine to negotiate a peace solution with Russia.

In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov commissioned by the German Press Agency, 55 percent called for talks aimed at ending the war. Only 28 percent are against it.

The majority of respondents also rejected Ukraine’s invitation to join NATO, as demanded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 54 per cent are against and only 27 per cent are in favor of presenting the prospect of membership to Ukraine at this point in time. Zelenskyy is taking part in the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July and is hoping that the way will be cleared for his country to join the defense alliance. Neither in Ukraine, nor in Europe, nor in NATO would the majority of the population understand if Kiev did not receive a “well-deserved invitation,” he said in a speech in April.
