103 million refugees – these countries take in the most

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that around 103 million people were displaced by October 2022. More than half of them are internally displaced persons in their own country. However, around 32.5 million people also flee to other countries – particularly often to the ones listed here. The war in Ukraine plays a major role in global refugee movements, but other conflicts and natural disasters also deprive millions of people of their homes.

That’s why the number of people fleeing has also increased, confirms Marius Tünte from the UN refugee aid star: “The numbers are increasing worldwide as long-term conflicts such as Yemen and Syria continue to exist with no prospect of resolution and man-made climate change is displacing more people and exacerbating existing conflicts.” The number of refugees has therefore doubled in the last decade.

In Germany, too, the number of asylum seekers has been rising again significantly for about a year. In the first four months of this year, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees received 101,981 asylum applications – around 78 percent more than in the same period last year. In addition, the municipalities are taking care of more than a million war refugees from Ukraine. In a global comparison, Germany has taken in the most refugees from Ukraine. Nevertheless, other countries have more asylum seekers overall – mainly because most people (69 percent) flee to their neighboring countries.

Discussions about refugees after the migration summit

In Germany, after the migration summit of the federal and state governments on Wednesday, the discussion continues on how to deal with the currently around 2.2 million refugees – and who pays for their accommodation, food and other costs. In the run-up, the federal government did not want to provide any further money, but now the federal states have been promised another billion to care for refugees, in addition to the existing funds. However, the municipalities were not invited to the summit, as they keep complaining about being left alone with the accommodation, integration and costs of refugees. Further consultations are planned for November. The opposition criticized the results.
