Australia coach Graham Arnold admitted today that he is getting “goosebumps” at the chance to play a friendly against world champions Argentina in China next month.

The friendly has not yet been officially confirmed, but the Australian press reported that the negotiations between the two parties to play the match at the Olympic Stadium in Beijing are advanced in what would be the retaliation for the match played between the two teams in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, which Argentina won 2-1.

“It would be fantastic. I get goosebumps thinking about that possibility. It would be fabulous to be able to face the current world champions,” Arnold said on the official website of the Australian league (A-Leagues).

The coach added “There is no better way to test the players than by making them play against a top opponent, because when they face an inferior opponent, they don’t learn much. I like these types of tough matches, against teams that push us to the limit and Let’s push them to the limit.”

Arnold revealed that he spoke to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni in Qatar last week, ahead of the draw for the 2024 Asian Cup: “He came over to me, gave me a hug and told me that they had really appreciated the game against us.”

According to the Oceanic coach, Scaloni told him that “Australia was the toughest rival of all in the World Cup and that he really liked the way we played and the attitude and courage of the players. He was very complimentary towards us.”
