Bachmut: Ukraine reports taking “more than ten positions”

The Battle of Bakhmut is considered the longest in the entire Ukraine War. Now the Ukrainian army wants to have recaptured larger areas. The Wagner mercenaries could be surrounded. But the situation remains tense for the Ukrainians too.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Ukrainian troops have recaptured “more than ten” Russian positions around the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which has been heavily contested for months. “Today our units captured more than ten enemy positions on the northern and southern outskirts of Bakhmut,” Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliyar told Telegram on Sunday. Some enemy soldiers have been captured, she added.

“Bitter fighting was still raging” in the city, Malijar said. The Russians tried to advance and destroyed “everything” in their path.

The Russian mercenary troop Wagner played an important role in the fighting in Bakhmut. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin had accused Russia of not providing enough ammunition. He also accused the Russian army of “fleeing” positions near Bakhmut.

The Ukraine recently reported recaptures in the Bakhmut area – the Kremlin rejected this. The battle for the eastern Ukrainian city is the longest-lasting of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 2022. The city, which had a population of 70,000 before the start of the war, is largely destroyed and deserted after months of fighting. However, Bachmut has meanwhile attained great symbolic importance for both sides.

Russian military resists

“Against all odds,” Maljar described the recent successes of the Ukrainian troops. “That’s when 1 meter is worth 10 kilometers in terms of the complexity of the task.”

Despite the Ukrainian successes, the situation near Bakhmut remains tense, as the Russian military is offering resolute resistance. “The enemy has gathered all his forces there and is trying to advance, destroying everything in his path,” Maljar wrote. “The fierce fighting continues.”

Now there is a threat of encirclement of the Russian mercenary group Wagner deployed in the city.
