A drug war is raging in the Netherlands and Belgium, which could also threaten Germany: the mafia makes billions – and kills without scruples.
The lawyer
On the first Friday morning of this year, Vito Shukrula left his office in West Amsterdam. The criminal defense attorney, 34, pulls the door shut and hurries across the street to his black Mercedes C-Class: straight back, steady gait, suit fits, shoes shine. He wears a Cartier watch on his wrist.
Shukrula will do a job that day that he didn’t bother to do. Many Dutch people know him as an up-and-coming lawyer from the newspaper or television. Mostly he represents men who are said to work for the cocaine mafia. Also this time. But this time his job is trickier than usual, even trickier.
