European elections 2024: Ambassadors of the EU countries agree on a date

The next European elections are scheduled for 2024. The ambassadors of the EU countries have now agreed on an exact date.

The next European elections will take place from June 6th to 9th, 2024. The ambassadors of the EU states agreed on this in Brussels on Wednesday, as the responsible Swedish Council Presidency announced. The decision has yet to be formally confirmed. This is scheduled for next Monday.

The period of several days applies to all EU member states. According to the Federal Returning Officer, this is intended to ensure that the various electoral traditions can be maintained. In most member states, as in Germany, elections are held on a Sunday or public holiday. This means that the election in Germany should take place on June 9, 2024.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Returning Officer said a formal decision had yet to be made when elections would take place in Germany. The decision will be announced by the federal government.

European elections determine MEPs in the EU Parliament

Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years. The voters decide on the composition of the approximately 700 seats in the EU Parliament. The previous European elections were in May 2019. At that time, both right-wing and right-wing extremist parties gained ground, but the Greens and Liberals also made strong gains. Christian Democrats and Social Democrats hit historic lows. The European Parliament sits in Strasbourg and Brussels.

The election marks the beginning of the process of replacing the heads of the EU Parliament, the EU Commission and the European Council.
