French right-wing populist Marine Le Pen has denied allegations that her party is too close to Russia. “We have nothing to blame ourselves for,” Le Pen said at a hearing before a parliamentary committee in Paris. In 2014 she received a loan from a Russian-Czech bank for her party in the amount of 9.4 million euros without anything in return, she emphasizes.

“I’m signing a loan with a bank, not with Vladimir Putin”, she railed visibly agitated during the questioning. “That doesn’t commit me to anything.” Le Pen’s Front National (Today: Rassemblement National) had the choice between the loan and the demise of the party, she explained with a view to the financial difficulties of the RN.

The loan also played a role in last year’s French presidential campaign, which was marked by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Le Pen has repeatedly been accused of close ties to Russia. Center politician and later winner Emmanuel Macron accused Le Pen at the time: “You don’t talk to other leaders, you talk to your banker when you talk about Russia.”
