Health: Doctor President: Frequent new prescriptions are not always necessary

Long waiting times in doctors’ surgeries could be saved if prescriptions that were issued regularly were eliminated. Medical President Klaus Reinhardt has a suggestion as to what this could look like in the future.

In view of the waiting times in surgeries, Doctor President Klaus Reinhardt does not always believe that new prescriptions for certain medicines that are to be taken regularly are necessary.

For example, a patient gets a drug for high blood pressure, and the pack contains 100 tablets, said the President of the German Medical Association on Deutschlandfunk. “If he has to take one a day, he can do that for about three months. Then he has to come back to the practice and have to pick up the next prescription because our entire compensation system is based on quarters.”

If a patient is well adjusted, checks himself and reports if things are not going well, then it is not necessarily necessary for him to come every quarter. “Then it would be enough if he came once a year,” explained Reinhardt. “He gets a big pack of 300 pills or 350 and then calls when he has something.”
