In the struggle over the US debt ceiling, Democrats and Republicans have agreed on a compromise. But of all things, he is endangered by a dispute over funds for the tax authorities.

The freedom of the United States is defended in a tax agency – or lost, depending on your perspective and party affiliation. The “Internal Revenue Service”, or IRS for short, is the country’s highest federal tax authority and has become a pawn in the identity-political dispute between the two major parties. Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis recently said the IRS is a “corrupt organization” that needs to be replaced with something “completely different.” And, of course, that’s exactly what he’s promising should he become US President. Tax officials as an enemy, that probably only exists in US election campaigns.
