Statistics: As many naturalizations in Germany as last in 2002

The number of people who wanted to become German citizens rose by more than a quarter last year. They came from 171 different countries.

In Germany, more people were naturalized last year than at any time in 20 years. The Federal Statistical Office counted around 168,500 new citizens in 2022, as the authority announced on Tuesday based on preliminary results in Wiesbaden. This was 28 percent or around 37,000 people more than in the previous year. The largest increase was among Syrians with an increase of 29,200 naturalizations. They were followed by Ukrainian newcomers with an increase of 3,700, Iraqi newcomers with an increase of 2,400 and Turkish newcomers with an increase of 2,000.

29 percent of those naturalized were Syrians, and a total of 48,300 Syrian nationals were naturalized. On average they were 24.8 years old and had been in Germany for an average of 6.4 years, two thirds were male. The Federal Office explained that these are refugees who are now increasingly meeting the requirements, such as sufficient language skills, a secure livelihood and, as a rule, a minimum stay of eight years. The latter does not apply to spouses and underage children – there were 15,400 naturalized Syrian family members in 2022, almost three times as many as in the previous year.

5,600 Ukrainians were naturalized in 2022, almost three times as many as in the previous year. According to the statistics, they were 36.1 years old on average, mostly female (69 percent) and had been in Germany for an average of 13.3 years. 6,800 Iraqi nationals were naturalized in Germany after an average of 9.5 years. In the case of Turks, there were 14,200 naturalizations after an average of 24.2 years. They made up the second largest group among the naturalized. In total, people with 171 different nationalities were naturalized.

In order to be able to become a federal citizen after six years, you have to prove special academic, linguistic or professional achievements or civic commitment, as the authority explained. Last year there were 23,100 early naturalizations due to special integration achievements – a new high. Syrians were the most frequently represented nationality.
