War in Ukraine: Russia evacuates children from border region

Ukraine is increasingly attacking Russian territory. Russia is now taking action and evacuating children from two districts on the border with Ukraine.

The Russian authorities say they want to evacuate hundreds of children from villages in the area because of increasing attacks in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. “Today we start evacuating children from the Shebekino and Graivoron districts,” Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, said on Wednesday in the online service Telegram. Both areas are in the Belgorod region.

“Today the first 300 children will be taken to Voronezh,” Gladkov said. Voronezh is around 250 kilometers north-east and therefore further away from the Ukrainian border. The decision was made in view of the “deteriorating” situation. One person was reportedly killed in a Ukrainian attack on a displacement center in the region on Tuesday.

The situation in the region is “quite alarming,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow. He announced that “action would be taken”.

Also on Wednesday, the authorities in the southern Krasnodar region reported that a drone had hit an oil refinery. There were no injuries or damage.

In the past week, armed militias from Ukraine entered the Belgorod region and launched attacks. Since then, several areas near the border have come under heavy mortar and artillery fire, as well as drone strikes.

Kiev says it is preparing a major counter-offensive to push back Russian forces in Ukraine.
