Nord Stream explosions: CIA reportedly knew months in advance

A Washington Post report raises suspicions that Ukrainians may be responsible for the leaks in the Nord Stream pipeline. The CIA is said to have known about the plans three months before the incident in the Baltic Sea.

According to a US media report, after the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, further traces lead to Ukraine. The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the US foreign intelligence service, the CIA, learned of a Ukrainian plan for such an attack in June 2022, three months before the detonations.

According to this, the CIA was informed by a European secret service that a team of six members of an elite Ukrainian unit wanted to blow up the natural gas pipelines in a covert diving operation. According to the Washington Post, the team reported directly to the Ukrainian army command.

The renowned newspaper relies on secret documents that were allegedly shared by US National Guard Jack Teixeira on the Discord chat platform. Teixeira was arrested in mid-April after the leak of secret government documents made international headlines.

Suspicion of Ukrainian Nord Stream attackers hardened

The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines running under the Baltic Sea for the transport of Russian natural gas to Germany were destroyed by explosions at the end of September 2022. In recent months, there have been increasing indications that Ukraine could be behind the detonations, including through investigations by German authorities.

The Washington Post now reports that the US government learned of the alleged Ukrainian plan in June 2022 from a “close ally”. Accordingly, the information came from an informant in Ukraine. The United States then shared the information with Germany and other Europeans, writes the Washington Post, citing informed circles. The plan is said to have been very detailed – and very similar to the actual attack in September.

According to the plan, six participants should drive to the pipelines in a boat rented under a false identity and then dive to the pipes to plant explosives. According to media reports, German investigators have come to the conclusion that six attackers did exactly the same thing in September.

According to the Washington Post, those involved reported directly to the Ukrainian army chief Valeriy Saluschnyj. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was deliberately not informed about the plans in order to be able to credibly deny Ukrainian responsibility.
