Before the state elections in Hesse, the CDU should be satisfied with their current poll numbers. The party is far ahead of the SPD. Where do the other parties fit in?
Around six weeks before the state elections, the CDU is still the strongest political force in Hesse, according to a recent election poll. If the vote were to take place next Sunday, the Christian Democrats would get 31 percent, according to a survey by the Wahlen research group commissioned by the private radio station Hit Radio FFH and the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
The SPD reached 20 percent in the survey, the Greens 18 percent. The AfD achieved 15 percent, the FDP 6 percent. According to the survey value, the left missed the entry into the state parliament with 3 percent. A new state parliament will be elected in Hesse on October 8th.
Which coalitions would be possible?
In purely mathematical terms, the CDU and Greens could continue their coalition in Hesse for a third legislative period. A joint government by the CDU and SPD would also be possible. However, according to the information, half of the respondents have not yet finally decided which party they will vote for in the election.
In the Hessian state elections in 2018, six factions made it into parliament in Wiesbaden: the CDU with 27.0 percent, the SPD and the Greens both with 19.8, the AfD with 13.1, the FDP with 7.5 and the left with 6 .3 percent.
CDU Prime Minister Boris Rhein wants to defend his office, his previous deputy Tarek Al-Wazir wants to become the first green head of government in Hesse. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is the SPD’s top candidate.
According to the current survey, incumbent Rhein is ahead of his challengers Al-Wazir and Faeser in terms of popularity ratings.
