According to the traffic light plan, basic child security will initially cost 2.4 billion euros

The traffic light coalition plans to spend around 2.4 billion euros more on basic child security from 2025. This emerges from an agreement paper.

In the year of its introduction in 2025, additional costs of around 2.4 billion euros are initially estimated for the planned basic child security. This emerges from an agreement paper by the traffic light coalition, which is available to the German Press Agency. Zeit online and the news portal The Pioneer had previously reported about it. Government circles also said that with increasing use of basic child security services, the costs could also increase to up to 6 billion euros in the following years.

The Greens and the FDP had been arguing hard about the financing for months and finally agreed on Monday night. Family Minister Lisa Paus from the Greens initially wanted 12 billion euros per year for the project. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) named a sum of only 2 billion euros as a “note item”.

Basic child security: Only one contact point planned for all services

Previous benefits such as child benefit, benefits from the citizen benefit for children or the child allowance are to be bundled in the basic child security system. With more transparency and with the help of a central platform, many families are to be reached who, due to ignorance or bureaucratic hurdles, have not been able to access the funds to which they are entitled.

“In future there will only be one point of contact for all child benefits,” the paper says. The “Family Service of the Federal Employment Agency” should be responsible. The Family Benefits Office is already responsible for the payment of child benefit, for example.

The paper makes no statements about possible concrete increases in benefits in connection with the introduction of basic child security. However, a recalculation of the socio-cultural subsistence level would increase the standard needs in the second pillar of basic child security – the so-called additional amount. Concrete data on this would only be available after calculations by the Federal Statistical Office.

Further details are to be announced on Monday afternoon at a press conference with Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens), Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) and Social Affairs Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD).
