Special Counsel David Weiss, appointed by the Justice Department, wrote in a letter to the court on Wednesday that he was seeking indictment against the 53-year-old before the end of September. Hunter Biden is accused of briefly possessing a revolver in 2018, even though he was banned from doing so as a drug user.
The president’s son had actually admitted illegal gun ownership and tax offenses in June as part of an agreement with the federal attorney’s office for the state of Delaware. In exchange for a guilty plea in both cases, he should only get a light sentence, and he would have been spared a trial.
However, the deal fell through in July after the responsible judge questioned its content. Hunter Biden subsequently pleaded not guilty.

In August, US Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Delaware US Attorney Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden since 2019, as a special counsel.
