A day after a Russian attack on the city of Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine, authorities have revised the number of victims.
According to authorities, there were fewer deaths in the Russian attack on a market in the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka on Wednesday than first reported. “According to official information, there are currently 16 dead and 33 wounded,” police spokeswoman Olexandra Hawrylko told Ukrainian media. The day before there was talk of 17 deaths.
On Wednesday, a bullet hit a busy market street in Kostiantynivka. Videos on the Internet showed the impact and a huge fireball. Debris flew through the air and fires broke out. You could see dead people on the streets and people running for their lives. It was one of the most devastating attacks in weeks. Ukrainian government officials as well as representatives of the UN and the EU expressed their condolences to the victims’ families and strongly condemned the Russian attack.
It is not yet clear which bullet struck the Kostiantynivka market on Wednesday. In his first reaction, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially spoke of an artillery strike. According to their own statements, the police have now ruled out this version. Some local media assumed an S-300 missile.
Kostiantynivka is located just 20 kilometers southwest of the city of Bakhmut, which is occupied by Russian troops, and has repeatedly been the target of Russian attacks.
