BSI: SPD interior expert: Inquiries from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution about Schönbohm

Arne Schönbohm has been removed as President of the Federal Office for Information Security. The SPD is now making it clear: There have already been inquiries to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

According to the SPD, inquiries were made to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in the wake of the dismissal of the head of the authority, Arne Schönbohm, by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. “It was explained absolutely clearly that there was of course a query for knowledge, and that was made directly in October after the request for disciplinary proceedings (by Schönbohm against himself) was initiated,” said the domestic policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group , Sebastian Hartmann, on Deutschlandfunk.

That is quite common. “You put together all the incriminating and exonerating points and then decide whether to initiate proceedings. When it comes to security checks, this is also done regularly for all other officials and a corresponding security level.”

Schönbohm was dismissed as President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in the fall of 2022 after Jan Böhmermann’s ZDF program heavily discussed his proximity to an association in which members are said to have had contacts in Russia.

Fibers under pressure?

Hartmann put Faeser’s failure to appear in the Bundestag’s Interior Committee at the special sessions last Tuesday and Thursday, which had been requested by the Union, into perspective. “Ms. Faeser will appear in the next regular committee of the Interior Committee of the German Bundestag.” He said he has no doubt that “these questions will be answered in this form.”

“In this situation, she has already taken part in Interior Committee meetings three times after Mr. Schönbohm was recalled. And each time the Union has refrained from asking questions about this case. Then I can only identify that she was a few weeks before the Hessian state election campaign suddenly raises the issue,” said Hartmann, referring to the fact that Faeser is the SPD’s top candidate for the election on October 8th.
