The Republicans are beginning investigations into the impeachment of US President Joe Biden. And even if it has no chance of success, it can harm Biden.
US President Joe Biden faces impeachment investigations. The Republican chairman of the Chamber of Congress, Kevin McCarthy, announced this on Tuesday. There are credible allegations that Biden was involved in his son Hunter’s illegal business. This requires more detailed research. It remains unclear whether impeachment proceedings could actually be opened following investigations.
The Republicans, with their majority in the House of Representatives, have been pushing ahead with investigations into the Biden family’s financial dealings for months. Among other things, it concerns Hunter Biden’s business dealings abroad and whether Joe Biden, as US Vice President at the time, could have used his political influence for this.
It is virtually impossible that Biden will actually have to leave the White House in the end. Although the Republicans have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, not even all Republicans are likely to vote for impeachment. And even if it does: In the end, the Senate will decide on possible impeachment – and Biden’s Democrats have a slim majority there. This is where the attempt to remove Biden from office fails. Republicans know this just as well as the Democrats – but impeachment can still benefit the Republicans in the election campaign.
Republicans can now:
- appoint a subcommittee or working group to investigate the allegations
- View more Biden documents – including bank statements
- interview more witnesses
- Discuss the allegations in the House of Representatives – assuming the subcommittee recommends impeachment

Too old for the job? Compared to these heads of state and government, Joe Biden is almost a youngster
Theoretically, the Republicans could simply carry the investigation long into the election year in order to continually produce unpleasant headlines for Biden – without forcing the process any further. Even if the Republicans find no evidence of wrongdoing by US President Biden, doubts could grow among some voters as to whether Biden is really innocent. His son Hunter Biden has been under investigation for years. The US Department of Justice only appointed a special investigator in August. Specifically, Hunter Biden is accused of paying late income taxes of $100,000 in 2016 and 2017. He is also said to have concealed his drug past when he bought a gun in 2018. The son of the US President admitted his drug addiction in a book in 2021.
Damaging Joe Biden’s election campaign with impeachment
A possible impeachment procedure is therefore primarily suitable for influencing the election campaign. However, this move can also backfire. When the party launched impeachment proceedings against then-President Bill Clinton over his affair with Monica Lewinsky in the late 1990s, many voters felt it was unjustified – and it helped the Democrat achieve a surprise victory in the 1998 midterm elections. The two impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump also helped the Republican to rally his party and his supporters behind him.
