As early as December 2022, the Ukrainian president spoke at the US Capitol to support his country in the defensive war against Russia. Now apparently a new visit to Washington is coming up.
According to US media reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj also wants to visit Washington after his planned speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. A meeting with President Joe Biden in the White House and talks with members of Congress in the Capitol are planned for next week, reported the Washington Post, Bloomberg and CNN, among others.
The US media cited government sources; there was initially no official information about the date. It also remained unclear whether Zelensky would give a speech to Congress, as he did in December. According to sources at the political website Punchbowl News, his trip to Washington is scheduled for Thursday next week.
Criticism of aid payments has recently increased
During the visit, the Ukrainian president is expected to seek continued support for his country in the war against Russia. Biden and his Democrats are currently campaigning for additional aid totaling more than $20 billion (equivalent to 18.6 billion euros) for military, economic and humanitarian purposes.
In the Senate, Ukraine has received broad support from both parties since the start of the war, but criticism of the ongoing aid payments has recently increased in the House of Representatives. The Republicans have a slim majority there.
Zelensky last visited Washington in December 2022 and met Biden and delivered the speech in the Capitol to both chambers of Congress. No country supported Ukraine in the war with more money and military aid than the USA. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the United States has already committed more than $70 billion.
