Fridays for Future: Berlin and Hamburg: Thousands of demonstrators at climate protest

Several thousand people took part in a demonstration by the climate protection movement Fridays for Future in Berlin. The demonstrators gathered at the Brandenburg Gate on Friday afternoon and wanted to march through the government district after an opening rally. The police did not initially have an initial number of participants. The rally was also planned to include a performance by the pop band Juli and a speech by the well-known activist Luisa Neubauer.

There were a lot of younger people among the demonstrators, and apparently also a lot of students’ age. Banners read “Climate protection is a fundamental right” and “Profit today, dead world tomorrow.” Flags of the environmental protection initiatives Greenpeace and BUND were also on display.

With so-called climate strikes at schools and protests in more than 245 places in Germany and other cities around the world, Fridays for Future wanted to campaign for more measures for global climate protection on Friday. In Germany, activists are calling for the introduction of climate money and the tightening of climate protection laws.

Well-known musicians at the climate strike in Hamburg

Thousands of participants also gathered in the city center of Hamburg for the global climate strike. They wanted to demonstrate against the causes of climate change and for a better future. The demonstrators held placards such as “We should keep our planet livable for our grandchildren” or “You must act!” up.

The musician Herbert Grönemeyer and the band Silbermond, who were scheduled to perform on a stage at Jungfernstieg in the afternoon, also pledged their support. “We are between “under water” and extreme droughts. It is important to act now, immediately,” demanded Grönemeyer in an announcement by Fridays for Future. Demonstrations were planned at more than 200 locations nationwide.
