The CDU’s new visual offensive is experiencing a setback: in an image video of the Union, a building from Georgia can be seen instead of the Reichstag. Politicians from other parties scoff.
At first glance, the new video that the CDU released as part of its new image campaign does not offer any big surprises. On a wave that consists of three bars and represents the party’s new logo, the former chancellors of the Union from Konrad Adenauer to Angela Merkel can be seen, as well as a few snippets that are probably intended to combine conservative and modern.
So that’s what you would expect from a people’s party. And of course the Reichstag as a symbol of the political center of the Federal Republic should not be missing. But if you look closely, you’ll still be suspicious: the Reichstag looks very strange. The dome itself appears unusually narrow. In fact, the Union has made a bad mistake.
CDU embarrasses itself with fake Reichstag
The building in the video is by no means the Reichstag, which is home to the German Bundestag, but rather the former Georgian presidential palace in Tbilisi. Although it bears a slight resemblance to the Berlin landmark due to its glass dome, it is still an embarrassing mix-up for the party with the largest number of members in Germany.
The ridicule on the Internet and from other parties did not take long to appear after the Nius portal first reported the error. “There is a certain logic that those who believe that this is the Reichstag believe that Berlin and Kreuzberg are not Germany,” wrote Green Party politician Konstantin von Notz on X (formerly Twitter), alluding to a statement by CDU leader Friedrich Merz at the Gillamoos folk festival in Bavaria two weeks ago.

Renate Künast from the Greens also reacted to the clip: “First an introduction like #Loriot and then in the video a wrong building that is not the #Bundestag #Reichstag. An embarrassing false start for the #CDU.” “I would like to know whether an AI was involved,” wrote Left Party member of the Bundestag Anke Domscheit-Berg.
New logo for the CDU
The Christian Democrats’ image clip is part of a new image for the CDU, which Secretary General Carsten Linnemann presented at a press conference on Tuesday. At the center of the refreshed look is a new party logo with the party name in black letters instead of the previous red and a light turquoise blue as the base color. The design concept was developed by the Guru agency – and after the Reichstag mix-up, they will probably have to listen to a lot from the Konrad Adenauer House.
Update: The CDU has now deleted the incorrect video on X and uploaded a new clip – with the Berlin Reichstag in it. “We had a lot of domes to choose from and have now decided on the only right one,” the party wrote.

Red-Red-Green rules in Thuringia, but the opposition has the mathematical majority – if they vote together. Now the AfD is voting together for the first time in favor of a tax reduction bill from the CDU and is pushing it through the state parliament. The SPD is outraged, as are many Thuringians.
