Members of the Last Generation group have already defaced several well-known landmarks in Berlin. Now the activists have set their sights on the Chancellery.
Activists from the Last Generation group daubed a facade of the Federal Chancellery in Berlin with orange paint. They wrote the slogan “Olaf is lying” several times on a white wall.
According to a dpa reporter, uniformed police and plainclothes security forces intervened and sometimes used physical violence against the activists, who said they were advocating for more climate protection. Some were detained so that their identities could be established later.
According to the police, a total of around 70 demonstrators gathered in front of the Chancellery. Many of them held banners with the words “Olaf is lying” or “Climate Lying Chancellor” in their hands. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) claimed that the government’s measures against the “climate catastrophe” would be sufficient, it said in a statement from the so-called Last Generation. “This is a life-threatening lie.”
Members of the Last Generation group recently not only blocked streets in Berlin, but also daubed the Brandenburg Gate and the world clock on Alexanderplatz with paint.
