“Hard but fair”: Minister Heil warns: Don’t quit because of citizens’ money

Citizens’ money is the successor to Hartz IV and is expected to increase by more than twelve percent in 2024. Labor Minister Heil made it clear again: You have to be needy in order to receive citizen’s benefit.

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) has warned employees not to give up their jobs because of citizens’ benefits. “Someone who is stupid enough to quit because of the citizen’s benefit will not get any citizen’s benefit, they will first have their unemployment benefit blocked,” said the SPD politician on Monday evening in the ARD program “tough but fair.” Citizens’ money is not an unconditional basic income. You have to be needy. If you don’t cooperate, your benefits could be reduced by up to 30 percent.

Citizens’ money, the successor to Hartz IV, is expected to increase by more than twelve percent next year. Heil pointed to the mechanism that the sharp increase had to do with the high inflation this year. But if inflation falls again in 2024, the resulting increase in citizens’ benefits will be “relatively measly,” the minister predicted. At the same time, he referred to the “terrible consequences” for later pension claims if one only received citizens’ benefit.

Heil emphasized that work must be worth it. That is why the minimum wage must also rise and collective bargaining must be increased.
