After the Russian invasion began nearly 21 months ago, Kiev lifted all restrictions on women in the army. Many female soldiers have underage children.
More than 40,000 women served in the Ukrainian army during Russia’s war of aggression. The Ministry of Defense in Kiev said that this is a little more than five percent of the total strength of the armed forces.
Around 5,000 Ukrainians are currently engaged in combat operations. So far, more than 13,400 women have received combat participant status.
The report also shows that 41 percent of female soldiers have underage children and more than 2,500 are single parents. In 2014, the number of Ukrainian women in the army was just over 16,500. However, Kiev has since lifted all restrictions on women in the army, according to the ministry.
