Conflicts: Zelensky recalls the beginning of the Maidan protests

Ukrainian President Zelensky commemorates the 2013 pro-European protests in Kiev in a video message. And describes it as the first victory in the dispute with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj recalled the start of the pro-European protests in 2013 in the capital Kiev. “Ten years ago we carried out our first counteroffensive,” he said in a video message against the backdrop of Kiev’s European Square.

This fight was waged against lawlessness, lack of freedom and for a European future. He described the protests at that time as the first victory in the conflict with Russia that continues to this day.

Zelenskyj: Ukraine’s future lies in the EU

Together with his wife Olena and Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Zelenskyj commemorated the killed demonstrators and placed lanterns at a memorial site.

“The cold winter nights of Euromaidan changed Europe forever,” wrote EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the short message service X on the anniversary. Ukraine has been striving for freedom with dignity and pride for ten years. Today it is clearer than ever that the country’s future lies in the European Union.

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola made a similar statement. “The Maidan Revolution forever changed the future of Ukraine,” she wrote. “As Ukraine defends our values, our support grows stronger with every missile fired by Russia.” Ukraine not only defends its own territory, but also the EU and European values.
