After the budget verdict, Chancellor Scholz invited people to the coalition’s top meeting. The traffic lights dampened expectations in advance – and so there were no decisions. The government is facing a major effort.
The leaders of the traffic light coalition discussed ways out of the budget crisis in Berlin. The meeting in the Chancellery ended shortly after 10 p.m., as the DPA news agency learned from coalition circles on Wednesday. There was a good political exchange. All three partners said they wanted to find good solutions for the benefit of citizens and companies. bNo conclusions were expected during the deliberations.
Solution to the budget crisis still open
Before the meeting, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) was optimistic that future investments would be possible despite the budget crisis. “Yes, we will continue to invest in the future,” he assured. Germany has to have the courage to do this, also because other countries such as the USA and China work with high subsidies.
However, there is still open and heated debate about exactly what the government can spend money on in the coming year. The Federal Constitutional Court had declared the reallocation of Corona loans to a fund for climate protection and the modernization of the economy to be null and void. At the same time, the judges decided that the state was not allowed to set aside emergency loans for later years. According to Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), this will tear a hole of around 17 billion euros in the budget for the coming year. It also requires long-term investment decisions.
