US elections: Trump calls for TV debate: Biden reacts with ridicule

Trump has so far avoided a TV debate with Republican competitors. He now agrees to a debate with his expected rival Biden. The US President counters with humor.

US President Joe Biden responded with ridicule to his predecessor Donald Trump’s suggestion that he immediately have a TV debate with him. “If I were him, I would want to debate me too. He has nothing else to do,” he told reporters during a visit to Las Vegas.

The 81-year-old Biden wants to run for a second term in the presidential election in November. He has no serious competition within the party. Among the Republicans, Trump (77) is far ahead of his last internal party opponent, Nikki Haley, in the polls. Everything currently points to a new edition of the election campaign between Biden and Trump, who had already competed against each other in the 2020 election.

“I would like to debate him now”

Trump said in a radio show that he was ready for an immediate debate with the Democrat Biden. “I would like to debate him now because we should debate. We should debate for the good of the country,” Trump added on the “Dan Bongino Show.”

In the primaries for the Republican presidential nomination, the 77-year-old Trump has so far refused to take part in TV debates, despite all requests. After his most recent comments, Haley again called on him to take part in a TV duel with her.

Before the 2020 presidential election, Trump and Biden faced each other twice in a TV debate. Traditionally there are three debates, but one was canceled because Trump fell ill with Covid-19.
