In the ongoing war in Ukraine, President Zelenskyj is replacing his army chief. Olexsandr Syrskyj is now at the head of the armed forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed army chief Valery Zalushny from his post. Zelenskyj appointed the previous commander of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrskyj, as his successor. However, the Ukrainian president wrote on the online service X, formerly Twitter, that he asked Saluschnyj to remain “on the team.”
Zelenskyj dissatisfied with army leadership
There had been speculation for a long time about Saluschnyj’s removal. There have been tensions between the army chief and Zelensky for weeks. According to high-ranking Ukrainian circles, Zelensky accused the widely popular Saluzhny of not making any real progress for Ukraine on the front against Russia for months.
Zelenskyj now announced that a “new leadership team” would take over the leadership of the Ukrainian armed forces. He discussed the renewal of the army leadership with Saluzhny. Ukraine needs a “realistic” battle plan for 2024.
Ukrainian military strategy must change
Saluzhny admitted after the meeting with the president that Ukraine’s military strategy “needs to change.” The tasks in 2022 were “different” than in 2024, he explained. Everyone would have to “adapt to the new realities” in order to “win together.”
