Pope Francis received Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the Vatican for a private audience for the first time. The head of more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide and the SPD politician sat together in the Apostolic Palace for a conversation that lasted about half an hour. According to the Chancellor, the topics included the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East as well as dealing with migration.
Scholz then reported on an “important conversation at a time when it is important that we look to the future with a clear view and have clear principles.” He added: “It’s also an important, meaningful conversation for me personally.”
The two also exchanged gifts: Scholz presented the pontiff with the official ball of the 2024 European Football Championship, which will take place in Germany, and a porcelain bear with the coat of arms of the Federal Republic of Germany.
For the Chancellor it was the first long encounter with the 87-year-old pontiff. The two had already met at the beginning of last year on the sidelines of the funeral of the former German Pope Benedict XVI. met. Francis is also head of state of the Papal States in Rome.
