First a car park, then an apartment in Friedrichshain – the police are intensifying their search for two ex-RAF terrorists, but so far they have been unsuccessful. It is hoped that new leads will come from a construction trailer in which one of the people being sought is said to have lived.
The search for two former RAF terrorists continues to keep the police in Berlin busy. On Sunday evening, officers searched an apartment in the Friedrichshain district, but no one was arrested. “No one was found in the apartment, so there were no arrests or anything else,” said a spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) late in the evening. She did not say whether traces were found that could help investigators in the further search for Ernst-Volker Staub (69) and Burkhard Garweg (55).
Only around two kilometers away, the police had already searched parts of a left-wing alternative trailer site in a large-scale operation on Sunday morning during the RAF search. A construction trailer container is said to have been used by Garweg and was confiscated: “We assume that the construction trailer container was Burkhard Garweg’s accommodation,” said the LKA spokeswoman.
Construction trailer transported away
The confiscated construction trailer was removed early on Monday morning. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the leading Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) to the German Press Agency. According to a dpa reporter, the construction trailer, which was around eight meters long and 2.50 meters wide and covered in sheet metal, was towed by a truck belonging to the Technical Relief Agency. The trailer should be examined forensically in the next few days, said the LKA spokeswoman. It is still unclear how long the operation will last. The search measures continued.
The investigators assume that Garweg used accommodation on the trailer site that was searched.
Search for third RAF generation
Just a few days ago, former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette was also arrested in Berlin. Like Burdock, 65, the dust and cooking path went underground over 30 years ago. All three belonged to the third generation of the former left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction.

30 years of left-wing terror – the chronicle of the RAF in Germany
The RAF was the epitome of terror and murder in Germany for decades. In 1998 it declared itself dissolved. During the active terror period of the third generation, the then Deutsche Bank boss Alfred Herrhausen (1989) and Treuhand boss Detlev Karsten Rohwedder (1991) were murdered.
Arrest warrants for Staub and Garweg
There are arrest warrants against Klette, Staub and Garweg on suspicion of involvement in terrorist attacks. They were or are also wanted for several robberies. Between 1999 and 2016 they are said to have robbed money transporters and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. They are also accused of attempted murder because there was a shooting.
