: New Palestinian prime minister forms government

Palestinian President Abbas has issued a decree expressing his confidence in the newly formed government under Prime Minister Mustafa. 22 of the 23 ministers do not belong to any party, eight come from the Gaza Strip.

Mohammed Mustafa, recently appointed as the new Palestinian Prime Minister, has formed a new technocrat government. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree expressing confidence in her on Thursday, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported. 22 of the 23 ministerial posts will therefore be filled.

Washington is relying on a revamped PA for the period after the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip. The USA wants the autonomous authority, which has only ruled in the West Bank for years, to take back control in the Gaza Strip, where the Islamist Hamas was in charge – and thus also promote a two-state solution as a comprehensive approach to pacifying the Middle East. Israel rejects the plans. Hamas violently drove the autonomous authority out of the coastal strip in 2007.

Some women are also expected to take on ministerial positions

According to the media, the ministers of the future technocratic government do not belong to any party. Eight ministers come from the Gaza Strip. Some women should also take on positions again. Prime Minister Mustafa will also serve as Foreign Minister. The new government will reportedly be sworn in on Sunday.

As part of the reform of the Palestinian Authority (PA) desired by the USA, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Mohammed Mustafa as the new prime minister two weeks ago. Previously, the outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shtaje submitted his resignation at the end of February – following pressure from Arab countries and the USA.

According to Wafa, the new government wants to give the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip the highest priority in its work. For example, a plan to provide aid to the Palestinian territory is to be developed.
