Haiti has never been a land of milk and honey. Now it’s blood. Not only corrupt politicians, cold-blooded gangsters and environmental disasters are to blame for the chaos in the desperately poor Caribbean country – but also false friends.

A reliable sign that a country is really going to the dogs is when the West flies its people out. The spiral of violence in Haiti has been spiraling to unprecedented heights for years, and anarchy has been the unofficial form of government since the end of February. The more than 200 gangs that have previously ruled the desperately poor Caribbean state from the penumbra are no longer afraid of the spotlight.
