After the Iranian attack from Israel, the EU foreign ministers met in a video conference. Will punitive measures be taken against Iran? What speaks for and what speaks against.
The EU is considering possible new sanctions against Iran after the attack on Israel. As several diplomats said after discussions with representatives of the member states in Brussels, the issue is likely to come up at a video link between foreign ministers tomorrow.
New punitive measures could therefore be imposed via a sanctions regime that was set up after Iran began supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine through drone deliveries. So far, among other things, it has banned the export of components to Iran that are used for the construction and production of unmanned aircraft. In addition, people and organizations are also affected by punitive measures.
According to diplomats, however, there could be a risk of escalation against new, tough sanctions. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wants to continue trying to persuade Iran to again comply with an agreement to restrict its nuclear program. It is intended to prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb.
De-escalation is the focus
The video conference called because of the Iranian attack on Israel is intended to fundamentally discuss how the European Union can contribute to de-escalation in the region. On the one hand, the Iranian attack should be strongly condemned and the EU’s support for Israel’s security should be emphasized.
At the same time, the foreign ministers are likely to call for restraint and also remind people that the EU is calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In this context, unhindered humanitarian access to the suffering civilian population in the Gaza Strip is also considered necessary, as diplomats said on Monday evening.
Iran attacked Israel with drones and missiles on Sunday night, but these were almost completely intercepted. It is still unclear how Israel will respond to the unprecedented air strike. Iran’s attack was in response to a suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, in which two generals from the influential Revolutionary Guard were killed.
