Ukraine war: NATO countries want to provide more air defense systems

Ukraine is asking for additional defense systems in view of heavy Russian air strikes. After a crisis meeting at NATO, there are now new commitments.

According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO states want to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems. “NATO has captured existing resources within the alliance and there are systems that can be made available to Ukraine,” he said after a video conference with the defense ministers of NATO member states and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Stoltenberg expects “new announcements soon.”

For months, the leadership in Kiev has repeatedly appealed to the allies to provide more ammunition and more resources for air defense. Only on Wednesday Zelenskyj called for “immediate measures” from NATO to strengthen his country’s air defense.

Will US Parliament approve aid to Ukraine?

In the USA there may also be movement in the Ukraine aid blocked by the House of Representatives: The Chamber of Parliament will vote on Saturday on a military budget worth 61 billion dollars, the equivalent of 57 billion euros. The support is part of a legislative package that also includes $26 billion in aid to Israel and $8 billion to Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific.

President Joe Biden has announced that he would sign off on Ukraine aid immediately. Before that, however, the Senate – the second chamber of Congress – would have to approve the new bill.
