The Koblenz public prosecutor’s office has stopped the investigation into the deadly flood disaster in the Ahr Valley. Some survivors are now defending themselves legally.
According to their lawyer, survivors of the deadly flood disaster in the Ahr Valley have lodged a complaint with the Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office against the discontinuation of the investigation. This was announced by her lawyer Christian Hecken. The complaint was filed on Monday, it said.
The Koblenz public prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday that it would stop the investigation into the 2021 flood disaster. She had previously investigated ex-district administrator Jürgen Pföhler (CDU) and an employee of the crisis team for, among other things, negligent homicide by omission.
After extensive investigations, the public prosecutor’s office came to the conclusion, among other things, that it was an extraordinary natural disaster, the extreme extent of which could not have been specifically predicted by those responsible in the Ahrweiler district. At that time, 136 people died in Rhineland-Palatinate, thousands of houses were destroyed and roads and bridges were washed away. One person is still missing.
Now the Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office has to decide. If she rejects the complaint, the surviving relatives still have the option of going to the Koblenz Higher Regional Court.
