In response to a shooting that left six people dead, the US state of Tennessee passed a bill allowing school teachers to carry handguns. However, the school staff must be trained beforehand.
Around a year after a fatal gun attack, a bill has been passed in the US state of Tennessee that allows teachers and other school staff to carry concealed handguns. The measure passed the Tennessee House of Representatives on Tuesday after it had already been approved by the state Senate.
It will now be forwarded to Governor Bill Lee. He had previously declared that he was “open” to carrying weapons. He has reportedly never vetoed a bill.
Tennessee: Teachers must be trained on weapons
The bill establishes various requirements for school employees to carry handguns. This includes 40 hours of basic training and a further 40 hours of training per year.
Just over a year ago, an attacker opened fire at a Nashville elementary school, killing three children and three school staff members before being shot dead by police. Fatal gun attacks occur regularly in the United States. Schools are also often affected.
