As expected, the CDU re-elected Friedrich Merz as party leader for two years with almost 90 percent. The 68-year-old received 873 of the 972 valid votes at the federal party conference in Berlin. There were 99 votes against and 9 abstentions. This corresponds to a result of 89.81 percent. Merz thanked “for the great vote of confidence.” “I’m looking forward to the work that lies ahead of us over the next two years,” he said. These will be tough years, but the CDU will come out of this party conference with the wind at its back.
Linnemann with better results than Friedrich Merz
Before his re-election, the CDU leader received the demonstrative support of his party’s prime ministers. “Let’s support Friedrich Merz together. Let’s send a signal of unity,” said North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst. Hesse’s Prime Minister Boris Rhein said it was Merz’s personal achievement to have raised the CDU again after its collapse in the 2021 federal election.
Secretary General Carsten Linnemann was also confirmed in office. The 46-year-old received 91.4 percent of the valid delegate votes, a better result than Friedrich Merz. Linnemann has so far only held the position on a temporary basis.
