So far, progress in climate protection has been assessed by individual sectors. And some areas, such as traffic, regularly performed poorly. Now the way of evaluating things is changing.
The Federal Council has approved changes to the Climate Protection Act. According to the amendment, there will in future be a multi-year, cross-sector overall assessment of greenhouse gas emissions. This should be reduced where the greatest savings potential lies. This means that the previous sectoral approach no longer applies. This particularly pleases Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), because the transport sector has always failed to achieve its goals.
The amendment does not change the climate goals themselves. Germany should continue to be greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. In a resolution, the state chamber called, among other things, for an obligation to make additional adjustments if Germany noticeably falls short of its climate targets.
