Military: British Conservatives want to introduce compulsory military service

If they win the election, the Conservatives in Great Britain plan to introduce compulsory service for 18-year-olds. “Too many young people live in a bubble within their communities,” they say.

If the Conservative government in Great Britain wins the upcoming parliamentary elections, it wants to introduce compulsory national service for 18-year-olds. Young adults will therefore have to choose between a year of paid military service and unpaid weekend work for institutions such as the police, fire service or health system.

“It’s about dealing with social fragmentation. Too many young people live in a bubble within their communities,” said British Home Secretary James Cleverly in an interview with Sky News.

Commentators speculated that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives were targeting voters on the right of the political spectrum with the announcement. Elections will be held in Great Britain on July 4. The right-wing populist party Reform UK is now in third place in polls behind the opposition Labour Party and the conservative Tories.

A Labour spokesman criticised the move as a clumsy attempt to plug holes created by military cuts in recent years.

In Germany, too, the debate about compulsory social security time keeps cropping up. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is in favor of this. However, the governing parties are divided on the matter.
