Even as we drive through the city, the one important issue that is at stake here in Birmingham becomes clear. Taxi driver Salman explains on the way to the Yardley district that he used to have a small company. “I made paper bags. Business was good.” His raw materials came from EU countries, his workers from Poland and Romania. Then came Brexit. First the workers stopped coming, then the materials became unaffordable, “because of the high tariffs.” Salman had to close his company – and now earns his money as an Uber driver.
