The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is targeting Franz Schmid: The AfD member of the state parliament is being monitored, among other things, for financially supporting extremists.
The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution is monitoring AfD state parliament member Franz Schmid on suspicion of extremism. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Schmid has close ties to the right-wing extremist “Identitarian Movement”, as the Interior Ministry in Munich announced in response to a request from the Green Party parliamentary group leader Katharina Schulze. Schmid is also said to have financially supported extremists.
The AfD politician is also on the federal board of the youth organization Junge Alternative. Bayerischer Rundfunk first reported this.
The Neu-Ulm MP rejected the allegations: “The constant attacks by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution on the AfD are nothing other than political campaigns and should be rejected as such,” Schmid said when asked.
According to the state interior ministry, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is only allowed to monitor a member of parliament if he abuses his mandate to fight against the free democratic basic order or actively and aggressively fights against it. According to the ministry, Schmid meets these criteria. Green Party leader Schulze said: “The Interior Ministry’s response to my inquiry shows what a great danger Franz Schmid poses to our democracy.”
