The relationship between Chancellor Scholz and opposition leader Merz is considered to be distant – something the CDU chairman regrets. Now the two have spoken to each other.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz met in the Chancellery for a discussion. The meeting in the morning lasted about an hour, according to sources in the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. No details were given about the content. Deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann simply said at the federal press conference that they do not comment on confidential discussions.
Merz had repeatedly offered Scholz cooperation on important political issues such as the war in Ukraine in the past. At the same time, the opposition leader in the Bundestag criticized the chancellor for showing no interest in this.
