Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has been examined in hospital after an attack. “The blow caused a slight whiplash,” her office said on Saturday. She is otherwise in good condition, but shaken by the incident. Frederiksen’s participation in several events on Saturday has been cancelled.
The 46-year-old was physically attacked by a man in downtown Copenhagen on Friday. The police arrested a 39-year-old man who is now due to appear in court. The background to the crime was initially unclear.
Politicians from several countries condemned the attack. “The attack, which targeted the Danish Prime Minister, is intolerable. I strongly condemn this act and wish Mette Frederiksen a speedy recovery,” said French President Emmanuel Macron on Platform X.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote: “I condemn this despicable act, which contradicts everything we believe in and fight for in Europe. I wish you strength and courage – I know you have plenty of both.” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed: “An attack on a democratically elected head of government is also an attack on our democracy.”
