The SPD suffered its worst result ever in a national election in the European elections, with around 14 percent. Secretary General Kühnert spoke of a “hard defeat”.
SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert described his party’s performance in the European elections as “a very bitter election result.” “For us, this is a hard defeat today,” Kühnert said on Sunday evening on ARD.
Kühnert said that there was no need to discuss Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) as a person. The SPD had put up posters of Scholz during the election campaign. Not putting up posters of him as a central figure in Europe would have missed the point of the election. It would be very bad form to blame the SPD’s disastrous performance on one person. “We win together and we lose together.” The SPD is not looking for scapegoats.
Now the SPD must look for mistakes and honestly work through the result, said Kühnert. He promised his supporters: “We will come back.” Kühnert believes that one reason for the result is that the SPD, as the strongest force in the coalition, must ensure order, but at the same time show its profile.
