EU Commission President: Von der Leyen calls for rapid EU accession talks with Ukraine

Ukraine longs to join the European Union. EU Commission President von der Leyen has set a target date for the start of negotiations in Berlin.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has spoken out in favor of starting EU accession negotiations with Ukraine at the end of June. Ukraine has fulfilled all agreed reform steps, said von der Leyen in Berlin at the international reconstruction conference for Ukraine. “That is why we believe that the European Union should begin accession negotiations with Ukraine, and do so as early as the end of the month.”

Ukraine currently has the status of a candidate country for EU membership. An EU summit in December last year decided to start accession negotiations with it. However, there is no agreed date for this yet. Hungary, for example, still has additional demands.

Von der Leyen announced that an additional amount of 1.9 billion euros would be made available to the country by the end of June from the new Ukraine support program worth up to 50 billion euros. According to her, this is also a recognition of the comprehensive reforms of the country at war with Russia. With this financing instrument, the European Union is supporting Ukraine in its economic recovery as well as in reconstruction and modernization.
