In an ageing society, more and more people are dependent on care – but how can this be paid for? The financial outlook is darkening again.

The nursing care insurance is expecting to be in the red again this year and is warning of growing financial risks. In the first quarter of 2024 there was a deficit of 650 million euros, said Gernot Kiefer, deputy CEO of the umbrella association of statutory health insurers, which also represents the nursing care funds, in Kremmen, Brandenburg. A deficit of 1.5 billion euros is expected for the year as a whole, and 3.4 billion euros for 2025. This would correspond to a contribution increase of 0.2 points.

Last year, the nursing care insurance system closed with a surplus of 1.79 billion euros. This was due to additional income from a contribution increase on July 1, 2023. The contribution for those without children rose to 4 percent and for contributors with one child to 3.4 percent. The employer share rose to 1.7 percent.

Families with at least two children pay less than before – based on the employee share. The reform of the traffic light coalition, which also stipulates relief for those in need of care, is expected to mobilize an additional 6.6 billion euros per year. It was actually intended to secure finances until 2025.
