There are increasing calls in parliament for a fundamental re-evaluation of government Corona measures – but how? The Chancellor has a preference.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in favor of reviewing Germany’s Corona policy. The suggestion that he likes most is to let citizens’ councils deal with the issue, said the SPD politician in a summer interview on the ARD program “Report from Berlin.”
Then not only experts and MPs would be involved, but also citizens. “I don’t think that’s a bad thing.” As a “good experiment” by the Bundestag, it has already worked once.
Scholz made it clear that if you look at the balance sheet retrospectively, “we closed schools more in Germany than in other countries, and that was certainly not the right decision.” SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich had brought up the idea of a citizens’ council on Corona. A first citizens’ council of parliament with randomly selected participants had recently presented recommendations on food policy.
The FDP and the Union, among others, have spoken out in favor of a Bundestag commission of inquiry with members of parliament and experts. The Greens are also calling for an investigation. It is unclear whether and how this will be addressed during this legislative period. The options for an investigation include protective rules with masks, tests and vaccinations or closures of schools and restaurants.
